Interesting

Unless they get too big for themselves, this is where you can talk about the "other" brands of DSLR's: Konica Minolta / Sony, Pentax / Samsung, Olympus, Horseman, etc.

What is this glorified lens hood meant to do?

Simple - it’s origami for your lens. A hood and cap in one

I wonder though, whether, in a dusty situation, if this would really keep dust off your front element? I suspect that effective sealing between the leaves might be an issue.

Interesting idea.

Not sure about the dust sealing though. Might be useful in a seaspray type of situation.

One of the niggles would be the slight jagged edges (when closed) rather than a smooth rounded border of the cap which might get stuck or rip into your bag when you push and pull out your camera.
