Well I now have a brand spanking new D2x (thanks Birdy) so I took it out for a spin this afternoon. Here are a few I've PP'd so far. Overall I must say it's BLOODY FAST and nowhere near as heavy as I feared. All shots taken with 24-120 VR. Click a pic for a larger version.

It's not as forgiving of lens issues as the D70 - note the green fringing around the rider's head and shirt in the first shot

As for the weight, wait until you have lugged it and a long lens around for eight hours, then, let me know whether you feel the same way :wink:

I think he's happy with it, he lugged a D2h with him last weekend for full two days shooting at the temple.

Peter - Well done. I just love the 'AF' speed and the noise the camera makes when you press down the 'Primary Shutter Release': heaven

Or he can mount a blade to it and make it a letter opener that takes a picture of the envelope, the seal, and then the first glimpse of horror on your face when you realise how much the bill is going to take out of your bank account. :lol:

1st and 3rd one's are special
you would notice not only the speed but the handling is great, the camera gives you more confidence to take a certain shot

all the technical advantages are secondary to that

Peter,

Firstly I need to get the following out of the way re your D2x aquisition:

You utter bastard!!!

Secondly, the first one is brilliant. Exposure, composition just perfect.

The second one has an almost illustrative feel to me, looks like an artists impression of a building. It appeal to me the least.

Third is great too. THe colours bring it together nicely in a very busy scene.

Peter, Looking good matey and i know we are going to see lots of spectacular shots from you as per usuall. I think you will enjoy it but maybe the speed of it wont be too over powering for you but at least you have it if you want to use it.

re: that green fringng around the rider's head and shirt - have you tried using the colour abberation control feature in Capture ? One click and it removes those types colour fringing very well.

I know a good gym you can join for when you want to carry the D2X and 70-200 together!

Now with the D2X, you may have to join LOZ's 24-120 club :lol:

That first one is great, it would have been a nice spot on the foreshore today.

Also a nice take on the fountain.

The fisheye will look interesting on the D2X. Looking forward to some great photos.

Mic - Thanks too for the strange image you've now planted in my brain. Taking a pic will never be quite the same again :shock:

The odd thing about these three images is I felt #3 was the stronger and liked #1 the least of the three. Just goes to show. BTW I printed these out & took them to show my co workers today & again #1 was the standout.

What makes you think a D2x is going to take better images then a D200?

Sweet. I like the 3rd pic the best closely followed by the first. not too keen on the second but it's a good solid photograph.

Congrats on the purchase Peter. Now you need some new glass to compliment the fine camera. A 28-70 F2.8 would be a great start instead of that 24-120

Thanks Steve. Reading my mind AND spending my money :wink:

Andrew - D2x vs D200 both will take similar pics given the person behind the camera has more impact. My view is the D2x is not $2000 better than the D200 at taking images, but it's available, more rugged has a few more features. If the D200 was around and had no banding problems I'd have had a harder purchase decision. Rated mirror activations is an issue too - my D70 has 30,000 or so activations after 18 months :shock:

And I suspect Vince was actually making a little joke :wink:

You're coming to grips with the D2X nicely Peter. I really like the composition and tone of #1. Terrific image.

Having taken about 20000 photos with my D2x and 4000 photos with my D200, and printed about 1/4 of these; unless you require FPS, shoot in a rainforest or print above 30' prints, then i can only see the D2x as a depreciating investment against the D200.

On a personal note, what made the D2x worse for me is that I shoot 30% of my photos at or above 800ISO. The D200 gives me another printable stop to work with over the D2x.

Availiability is another thing all together. I'm still amazed that you can't find an Aussie D200 today? Is it a Maxwell thing? Or Nikon Or ???

Banding hasn't been an issue for me or anyone that I know who owns a D200. It was a problem very early on for a very small number of users.
