Gary mentioned:
F1 in Malaysia is same price or cheaper and they let you take in the 400/500/600mm. This quote is including airfare and admission.

Boycott the Fosters Australian F1 Grand Prix. Damm rip-off and restriction of big lens.

Paul,

Yes, it's true.

The sort of rip off perpetrated by the AGP organisers and accommodation purveyors is such that Malaysia will cost about the same for the weekend, all told.

For instance, ticket prices are but a fraction of what Melbourne charge, and you can but tickets for just the Sunday, if you wish, thus making it significantly cheaper. Accommodation is far less expensive: we';re looking at Marriott Hotels around KL for around US$60-80 per night, per room. Try and find that sort of quality anywhere in Melbourne for that weekend for under triple that price.

That leaves airfares, which will, of course, be more expensive. But it's a swings and roundabouts deal, and the total cost should be something very similar, with the bonus that you get some decent air miles, plus duty free, thrown in with the deal.
