Switching to Canon

Well I've thought long and hard about this. An oportunity presented itself that meant I had to reevaluate whether my next camera would be a Nikon D200 or a Canon 5D (yes I know they have very different price points). Generally we buy into a lens mount system (Nikon, Canon etc) and having invested in the lenses stick to a brand. The offer before me though allowed me to switch lenses as well as bodies at a VERY attractive price. Additionally, thanks to Leigh, I'd played with the 1DS Mk II and discovered Canon's were pretty nice cameras too (although I must say their menu system isn't as intuitive)

After much soul searching over the last week or so and heaps of research I've decide to go with my special deal and my new toy has just arrived. A brand spanking new Canon 5D. Full frame and, according to my research (I'm at work and no time to have a play yet) I'm going to get bigger pics, but much better image quality. Along with this I have a EF 15 f/2.8 fisheye (couldn't NOT have one of those), EF 28-135 f/3.5 IS USM (my walkaround lens) and, drum roll, a EF 70-200 IS USM. This latter lens will be an interesting comparison to the Nikon beast. I have a few more lenses on the way (EF 20-35 f/3.5 USM, EF 50/1.4 USM) and a speedlite 580EX. BTW This terminology is all new too (IS=VR and USM=SWM) and takes a bit of getting used to.

Why the switch?

• Well the deal was brilliant (unfortunately I can't say how brilliant since that was part of the deal - suffice it to say I felt like I was stealing )
• The 5D is a full frame camera and after I'd done my homework both here and elsewhere I realised a FF camera offered me more than a DX body. SInce Nikon (or more likely their sensor suppliers) appear to lack the expertise to get a FF body to market in the near future I had no options in the Nikon segment.
• Canon also seem to have less quality control problems than Nikon too. The D200 banding issue and Nikon's slow response to it was in stark contrast to Canon who manage to get their products to market without major issues

Once I have had more of a play I'll give you some more feedback on my first impressions. PS It feels like Christmas - it sure is going to be hard to concentrate on work today.

That explains a few of the questions you've been asking recently.

Enjoy the new toy - I'm sure you shall - and I'm equally sure that you'll soon understand that the differences between DX and FF are more than merely technical, which is why I too would like a FF digicam.

And after you've had a good play, please let us know how you feel about the ergonomics. To me, the Canon is somewhat inferior to Nikon in that area, and I believe that it goes beyond just a "you'll get used to it" sort of thing.

Gary, the discussion of switching has been made a few times on NSN and a few of the Nikon convertors said that it actually is very natural (ergonomics wise) and intuitive (buttons/menus/wheels) after you've lived with it for a few years.

I'm sure that 5D will do pretty well in your capable hands. It must have been a pretty good price, quite a new selection of lenses.

Have fun and when you get a chance, let us know the results of your research that did make you switch to Canon, other then price. Mostly why you felt FF was the go for your photography.

anyway i am on hte way to canon too, the photoagency i work with has a range of canon lenses they lend out to their crew, i just need to buy a body and i can use these lenses without having to invest too much money in switching over

Welcome to the 5D Club, Peter. I hope you will be in awe of your new camera as I am. Good choice with the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS. I am a tad concerned about your choice of the other two zooms though. 5Ds are renowned for their ability to show up inadequacies in lenses, especially non-L lenses. I had the 20-35 when I first had my D60 and it was a good wide angle on the D60 but I am unsure if you will be happy with it on the 5D. The 28-135 has had mixed reviews in the past. Its possibly too late, but why not go for the 24-105 rather than the two wide zooms.

Congrats on the move.

I would love to hear your comments on the 28-135, as I'm too looking at a lens of this size. I have found lately the kit lens is too short and my zoom starts too long for some situations, eg weddings.

Although reading what Sheila has said I'm also wondering if this next lens should be an L and the 24-105 is the go. But it always comes down to $$$.

I myself, I simply can't justify that sort of jump in price, even with all the theoretical benefits of full-frame. The D70s will serve me well for a long time yet, and I have many other expensive hobbies... Home theatre, music, computers....

But this time next year.. who knows.

I've heard some rumors about a special AF version - with Canon's eye-sensing AF technology installed - of the 5D being released; is this what you have?

Gary, it doesn't have the eye auto focus of the old EOS versions, don't know why, they were certainly serious cameras in their time. Maybe they thought dslr had enough gimmicky technology already?
