Wanted to buy Canon G12

Postby surenj on Wed Oct 20, 2010 4:23 pm

I am trying to get a G12 for a friend (who is a newb who wants a good camera but can't be bothered with DSLRs or M*-ILFs or anything else)

Does anyone know of any good prices for this camera at the moment?

No reputed online seller has this as per Shopbot and the best price (from a reliable seller) I've got from is $677 from Gerry gibbs camera house...
http://gibbscamerahouse.com.au/canonpowershotg12-p-3370.html

Need the camera within 2 weeks.

Can someone help?

Suren,

B&H have it in stock and with the way the Aussie dollar is, at $500USD even if you pay for the extra for express shipping, you would get it within the two weeks and probably less then the $677AUD you found.

The G12 is just recently announced so that is likely the reason you are having problem finding someone with stock.

If your friend is can't get the G12 in time, looking at the Cano S95 or Panasonic LX5 would also be good options.

good luck,

standard shipping from B&H normally has it in your hands within a week has been my experience.

I think the "L" was for 'lens' and the "F" was 'fotodevice' or some such thing. However, you have now put DSLRUsers on the google map when someone searches for M1LF! :D

Hi there,
while not trying to discourage you thought I would share my experience with the G10...and just mention that if your friend is female and hoping to have a 'handbag carry everywhere camera' (hence not wanting Dslr etc ), or they are male and intend to carry it at all times, I would go as far as to say this is not the camera for them...
I bought the G10 as a take everywhere camera when I didn't want to lug the dslr around, but I wanted all the functions and quality...at the same time my friend bought one as her 'only camera' because she simply couldn't afford Dslr ... I found that it's physcial size means it just doesn't fit in the handbag so actually doesn't get taken everywhere ...and the carry case , apart from being another $100, looks great ,but actually becomes a bit of a PIA over time. I also find that while it's quicker than a lot of mini compacts , response times are still slow and irritating ie push button, pause, and then it takes the shot . My friend uses her's a lot but still finds it doesn't always get taken simply because of the size .
While there is a lot going for it technically, it's big so be sure they hold it and are comfortable with how it feels in the hand and the button positions etc.

DebT, you are a mind reader. It is a female and she has used the camera before (borrowed from friend). She is ok with the size. [It's the first question that I asked] LX5 doesn't go due to the lens cap.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Thanks Tony for the tip.

I guess the best camera is the one that you have with you. Which is why I love my 350D. It's small enough not to be too obtrusive.

Good question Cameron. I think the G12 may offer quicker adjustments to the manual modes. My friend is keen on learning photography (has asked me about courses and such) and I think this camera is a nice transition to a DSLR in the future. thoughts? or am I off the track here?

The S95 is smaller, has no lens cap but still retains a nice user interface....I think it is a worthy contender here!

your thinking is right, but there are alternatives. i'm about to buy an lx5 as we speak but have been hesitating between that and a g12. at the end of the day i picked the lumix over the canon primarily cos its a stop faster with an f2 lens. one stop with a sensor this size is the difference between a nice photo and a noisy mess. i also think the size and weight is far more appealing for a compact camera. at least for me...

the s95 is not really an enthusiast camera per se if you want manual adjustment. great quality from a tiny body though.

The S95 actually has really good manual control in my opinion as it seperates shutter and aperture controls completely with the customisable controlling aperture and the rear scroll wheel controlling the shutter speed. This is better than the G11 and all before it, but thankfully the G12 copies the Samsung EX-1 and adds a front control dial to the rear scroll wheel. The S95 adds a F2 lens (at the wide end) whereas the G12 is only a F2.8.
