i dont have any experience with the tammie. the bigma seems a very popular chocie for birding people so i'd consider that aswell.

I wasnt aware Tamron made a 200-800 ...
A friend of mine has the 200-500 F5-6.3 for her Canon, and thats a nice lens.

I had an inkling about that as well, but was too tired to check last night,. I cant find this lens after a quick google, but I do know the 200-500 which is a pretty good lens, a hell of a lot lighter than the Bigma. I have not had much first hand exp wiht it, but having seen some shots done useing this lens I can say that it would not be a bad choice over the bigma, esp if you already have the 50-200mm range covered (ie with an 18-200) and weight is an issue.

When Ive had a play with the Tamron 200-500 behind my friends Canon 400d, I found it a very nice lens to use and gave excellent results. My only critisism is that in Manual focus, I found the focus ring in the wrong position and a little awkward to use, but I know Id soon adapt if I owned it :)

Maybe they have put the wrong focal distance on it.

Even while covering up to a 500mm that enables you to take ultra telephoto shots of subjects further than the eye can see, its design is extremely lightweight and compact. When mounted on an APS-C size digital SLR camera, it provides a focal length equivalent to a 760mm for super ultra telephoto imaging.

Appears it is a typo. If you read the description on their site, they mention 500mm (and 760mm with and APS-C sensor). So this is a 200 - 500.

Was it for Nikon?
I have the Tamron 200-500mm and love it.
I used to take a lot more surfing photos than I do now and have found that with a new baby and other photographic interests I don't have much of a need for it anymore.
PM me if you would like more info.
Or check out my website http://www.indigoreefphotography.com.au and go to the action section, most of the surfing images are taken with the Tamron 200-500mm.
