Help with distortion

Postby Spooky on Fri Jul 28, 2006 11:24 am

Hello

Shooting now with my 17-35 lens. This shot is at 17mm. What is the best way to correct the distortion in the buildings in the top left of the shot? I have CS2

use your crop tool is a simple way.......... select all image tick perspective at the top and move the bottom 2 corners inwards...... do this in small amounts not one big hit.........

there are other ways but this is very easy.......

at the top under window and help........... in PSCS and PSCS2...... a small square which you tick and the word perspective

EDIT: you will only see this when you select an area for cropping

Found it thanks. But that is tough to fix, I can't say I have the knack. I can straighten them a bit but they look considerabley stretched and thinner.

Am I doing something wrong do you think? I didn't belive the distortion from this lens would be so significant and difficult to correct.

Everything I read on the net seems to imply distortion is a snap to fix blah blah. Not very intuitive to do and I don't really like my result.

I tried it using mostly the vertical distortion in the filter distortion menu and had a bit more success. I think my position shooting down on part of the scene made it harder to correct the distortion. Still I lost more of the image than I thought I would.

the perspective doesnt really bother me in this image, perhaps it would if I was taking a shot of a city skyline,
but the fact is the subject of this shot is the bride and groom.
I daresay that people wont be paying too much attention to the background

Edit->Transform->Distort - it depends which bits you want straight, I straightened the buildings and the lamp-post a bit.

Just shows you, dont use your lense at the extreme ends. In your case 17mm and 35mm. Just have to move your feet and get in closer or farther as the case may be.

Digitor, well done.

Which corners did you move and to where? I don't seem to be able to get good results with transform.

admajic

Agree with you but wasn't an option to move. That was the only place I could get that shot using a tripod. I didn't have a lot of time to search for other locations either.

The top left and bottom right, I think I left the others alone. The result is far from perfect, but I think you need to leave some perspective effect in a shot like this otherwise it can look a bit un-natural.

looks great... i just dont like the harsh shaddowing that youve added.. it looks too fake.. very very effective and eyecatching... just looks fake.. sorry to say... all things create a shadow with an overhead light source like the light post.. and for your shaddowing to work, the shadows need to bend to the light source.. the shadowing on the water is too harsh and thick... and doesnt help.. but very effective.. nice work

That's interesting. On my LCD monitor the tranisition from the black shadow to the water does look quite harsh. On my CRT that I did the editing on the shadow to the water is gradual and looks more natural and overall the image is darker overall.

Still I might reduce the top part of the shadow a bit.
