Non Windows Image Software

A friend of mine sent me this link to a site for an image processor, it works with UNIX, MAC and FreeBSD. I think that it may be worth a look for those who cannot or don't want to use Windon't OS.

It is called 'the Gimp' (Gnu Image Processor). It's an excellent piece of software, it's free, extensible, with a configurable user interface (you can even make it use all of the photoshop key strokes if that's what you prefer). I think you can also write scripts for repetitive tasks, but I haven't tried. The only limitation at the moment is that it doesn't seem to be able to use the RAW files, or adequately access the information stored exposure and orientation data in the images.

Here is the link for those interested.

Terry :) :) :)

Hi Yedrup,

actually, The Gimp has a plug-in for reading RAW files. It is called dcraw, I am playing with it at the moment. I'll post some more info about it later it in the Linux thread I started.

Also, exiftool, discussed earlier, gives you all the exposure etc information you need from the jpeg. Have a look at this thread.

Various other utilities also display EXIF info, gthumbs for example.

André

Terry

There are a few people here that use GIMP already (MHD is one that comes to mind)

Terry,

Gimp is also available as a Windows version. It is a very worthwhile free alternative to Photoshop. UFraw comes to mind as the raw convertor to have for Gimp or as a standalone app. It is based on dcraw code but has been taken to the level of a decent GUI and many additions and enhancements - one of those is the use of Nikon camera curves. Unfortunately there is, AFAIK, no curve uploader for *nix.

I tried GIMP on my Mac a while ago through the UNIX port system Fink, but I just found out that someone is making binaries of the app, I might give it another shot - PSCS is a little bit slow!

Thanks guys :D :D :D

I have passed on all your responses to my friend, hopefully these will help him with his processing. He does have a problem as his pc only uses USB 1 therefore is a bit slow.

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Terry
