Birddog, are you the one that will be looking at the email (that way I'll know who to address it to)?

Am looking at potentially getting some stuff...

I couldn't agree more. There is a nice mixture of humour and humanity in here that I've never seen before. Seems like most places people take advantage of the anonymity, or the posts just become so robotic and tedious to read through. I've never seen anything like this. Found it when someone recommended an aussie D70 user go check it out on dpreview. I followed the link and I think I've been back to dpreview like three times since (mostly linked through this site)

A good example of how a forum should be!!! :D

One of the only forums on the net you don’t feel intimidated on when posting a “Q”
No mater how dumb you think it mite be, it will be always answered in a non threatening manner 8)

Like having a beer at the pub with a heep of mates :P

So the list of current merchandise on offer - pro loop straps, hand grip straps. Polo shirts, D70 kits with Lowepro bags, Hoya filters kits: UV and CPL.

What else am I forgetting?

Thnx; I'm pretty sure Leigh is capable of doing this for us once he gets through the tail end of his school year.

And we'll be putting appropriate listings in the merchandise section here as well.

Yeah. Just let me get thru these last two weeks and I'll begin development, or rather continue development, over the course of next week.

Some questions, mind you... what would people like on the site? I mean, naturally, it would take a whole ton of effort for us to be something like DPReview (Oh I can just picture the amount of people who would want to review things provided Maxwell send them test units, etc)... but seriously... what does your vision of this website entail?

The first question is what is its primary purpose?
Is is a review site?
A merchandise site?

Perhaps something that has reviews of seperate items and then the possibility of purchasing them,,,

D70 centric - what we are now should be what we continue to be.
Things related to the D70 - acquiring one (Birddog's always had good deals on offer compared to retail shops), lenses and accessories for your D70's (speedlights, etc.)
Would the forum specific merchandise continue? ie. the custom logo'ed polo shirts; Optech OEM premium neckstraps/handstraps, etc?!

Perhaps a front page news site like every other photography related site?
Image hosting is already generously provided by Pixspot (Kristine), competitions run by MHD at Pot of Grass gallery, with prizes by Birddog, and these forums will no doubt continue to be central to the place. Hopefully regular local meets will take place within each city/state too.

Just a little word of advice guys. Best keep the scope, size and function of the forum small and simple. Let's not create a monster here!!!

There is a real danger of things getting outa hand... in fact I'm reading posts that suggest to me that we're already stretching Birddog's generousity and enthusiasm a little far.

Some of the reasons that we all like this as a gathering place is because it isn't a nikonians or a dpreview... let them do their thing and keep this simple and unique.

Sorry if I sound like a wetblanket... I've seen this kinda thing go wrong before.

I reckon MJ has hit the nail on the head. Lets just focus on what the forum started out to be. A meeting place for D70 users.

However, that said, i am working on an article to help newbies and veterans on getting satisfying compostion. I will hopefully have it finished over Christmas when i get a bit more time as work is very hectic at the moment. :(

I think MJ and KillaKoala are right. Not to say we can't expand but keep it in bounds. I would like a place for articles contributed by members which after vetting could be posted for the community. This is a good creative outlet and because we are learning as we go will be (could be) valuable for new members scaling the learning curve. I don't see any problem with a page listing merchandise either as we are already doing that but inefficiently through posts.

Must also echo previous comments re this forum. I too have not returned to others as I prefer to stay here. I realise now its actually a bit of an addiction. My wife continues to refer to this as "Are you still on that Kodak thing at THIS TIME OF NIGHT!" What can you do? :? (I mean KODAK?)This is the lady I sold my Nikon FE2 (and system) for many years ago to take her on a trip to Singapore and KL.

The focus here, as far as I'm concerned, is that it should be a friendly gathering place where we can discuss issues related to our D70s. And perhaps a bit beyond.

The ability to arrange meetings of members that are proximate to one another is something I view as important.

The ability to arrange great prices on cameras and lenses is a bonus I didn't expect, but one that is important.

The fact that we may have some branded merchandise is incidental to that.

The fact that we may occassionally have equipment reviews is an important adjunct to this, but also incidental.

I think keeping it ffriendly and simple is what it's all about.

A lot of what's been suggested makes good sense, maybe though some of these Ideas can be delegated to other sites like the competition for example, its a D70users comp based on MHD's website, maybe we can link to other sites from some of our members for some of these new ideas.

Killa
The new D75 will have an "auto composition menu button". It will have 2 settings...rule of thirds or neat and in the middle. By taking care of the troubling mechanics of composition the photographers mind will be freed to do what we all love best. Just pressing the shutter button.
