D200 - Official

Postby gstark on Wed Nov 02, 2005 1:01 pm

And possibly even exclusive.

These are not yet on the Meaxwell site (to my knowledge).

D200

Speedlight SB200

VR18-200mm

Availability is to be early January 2006, and final pricing is yet to be determined.

FWIW, the prices that Vanbar had online yesterday have now been significantly increased, but are now probably somewhat more realistic as an expected street price.

Enjoy.

VRII adds a VR Active Mode, which compensates for pronounced or regular vibration.

Should be interesting to see how well this works, I think I will be getting this lens if its as sharp as the 18-70

If you read this review, right at the end they discuss the improvements in the new VR system.
The review is a very comprehensive read on the new camera, BTW.

Are we going to see more lenses taking advantage of VR2 announced this year or will he fly solo for a few months to see how VR2 pans out?

I don't think we will see much of the new breeds this year but surely, they will be in the 06.

I have just received a confirmation:

The D200 will be available for members to test drive on the Saturday 14 or 21 Jan. 06 at the mini meet.

Perhaps with the following:
- 18-200VRII
- SU-800 & SBR200 macro flash

Details of the mini meet will be posted later in Sydney section

remember that the 70-200 is a standard lens, whereas the 18-200 is a DX.

If you're wanting to share the lens amongst your non-digital SLRs, the 18-200 will not be what you want to get.

Yes, and no!
If you have your name on the preorder list then there's a chance!

That's really funny! I found out from the guys in the office last week that apparently the rest of the world doesn't pronounce it with the long 'I' sound... I had the same reaction as you did when he said Nee-kon! Oh well, as long as my Nigh-Kon takes good pictures, I guess that's good enough for me

As a kiwi I have spent the better part of my professional life calling my camera a Nigh-kon. Having been in Aussie a while now I have almost given in to calling it a Nickon! I'm confused!

Anyway, my editor on one of the magazines got to play with the D200 today and he really likes it. He reckons it is better in feel and operation than the Canon 5D (and hes a Canon man!). First stocks are expected in Early Jan ... slight possiblity that it will be December but they are erring on the side of caution..... I'm going to be like a kid waiting for Santa!

Just read the Dpreview hands on preview of the D200. Seems like the PERFECT second body to have for the D2x, because it is a D2x with the bottom sawn off. All the controls, even the weather sealing is there. I can not believe how cool that it is. To me there is a slight difference in the controls of the D70 and D2x - making it a second body that can be a little confusing. CCD not CMOS too... Great if you have both D2x and D200 because you can expolit the positives of each technology.

10.2 MP is plenty in my opinion, well worth the sacrifice to get this mini D2x.

Phil says even the viewfinder is suprisingly big!

Looks like the dury will have to be out on the AF system. That is the only thing that certainly won't be as good as D2x, but how far behind?

I used to call "Nai-kon", when I'm travelling back to the USofA, I used "Nikon" my friends were :? so I had to corrected myself.
Same as I always used to say "Fall" and stubbsy corrected me as "Autumn"

I had few plays on Monday and Tuesday, asked to have a loan unit on the Saturday 12/11 for the folks at the mini meet and the answer is still pending. They didn't have many units available, most of them are now all over the places with the Reps and their commercial customers.

I like to have it for my collection and play, part from the D100 which I still have.

My negative to the new D200 are just neutral, though helping the guys on this board with the D70 not to over-expecting what the D200 can do more for them over the D70.

I have heard lot of: "I want & I want" prior to its announcement, hard to justify to upgrade to the D200 if you're just want something simple and still producing lot of stunning photos with your D70/s. Of course if money is not an object or you're seriously feeling the needs of it. Otherwise, hang on to the D70, your patience is your reward and the D70 is due to have the new replacement soon.

Its AF is fast & accuracy, more than the D100 & D70 but not with the D2 series, it's not the same speed as with the flagship models, real nice features in it.

You have to hold it in your hands with some slow and fast lenses, and under various lighting conditions, then you can tell.

It's the in-between of the D70 - D2 series, but I could not justify why it's closed to 3 or 2.1/2 times the damage of the D70s body, excluding all extra bit as the vertical grip (This is one of my biggest negative).

Apart from this, the CAM1000 does not impress me much. Perhaps, it's only myself due to the 2 x D2 which I'm owning and shooting.

Conclusion: I won't regret to ditch my ideas of having the 5D + Canon lenses and reversed my choice to the D200.

Heath Bennett wrote:Just read the Dpreview hands on preview of the D200.

Yes, it's another choice, but I hate to have difference type of batteries and accessories in my bag.
If you have a chance to play with it, definitely, it's not the D2x with the bottom sawn off, its viewfinder is little bit larger than the D70 but still not much.
Again if you can justify yourself around $3.5K (Including vertical grip and extra batteries) for this new baby as your backup body, then no question asks.

Hey Birdy

So can we gleam from this review that you are neutral on the D200 not jumping up and down for joy but also not smashing it on the floor with disgust.... :)

But seriously the D70 replacement is not going to be much better than the D200 is it? - probably will have very similar features (maybe not 5 fps though), for a cheaper price....?

Yes, trust me! it's, and I'll have my D200 soon as mentioned.

You'll be surprised with it once it's revealed.

I can easyly justify switch to D200 :)
1. ISO100
2. Better autofocus and more focusing points
3. Optional vertical grip with shutter button
4. Most important, Ive got one young person who will intercept my D70 immediately as I throw it to the air :)
