There's speculation that the new Filter Forge is going to make competing plug-ins obsolete, since the quality of its effects (created by a community of users) are so much better and you can use the node-based system to create your own plug-ins.

See some examples for yourself in issue 8 of the free Plugs 'N Pixels ezine.
