Ram usage in PSCS2

Postby Spooky on Sat Nov 04, 2006 4:01 pm

My CS2 seems to be running slowly the last few weeks.

When you guys open say a 4MB jpeg or so how much memory does CS2 report using?

Mine says around 900M used or my 2.32G avialable.

That seems like a lot of overhead if you ask me.

What could I have set wrong.

Thanks

Hi Spooky,
it depends which figures you're checking - if you use the system info in PS it tells you how much memory is allocated/used. That is the same figure you specify in % in preferences. So if you have 2GB and you specified 50%, it will show 1GB used.
This figure is not actually used all the time, rather it's the amount that PS reserves for itself.

The actual usage is different - I opened a 5MB photo and checked the actual usage in windows task manager and it reports 110MB used.

I am talking about the scratch amount reported at the bottom of an image. You can turn it on or off by clicking on the little black triangle.

The first number is the amount of ram currently being used to display the images you have open, the second figure is the amount of memory PSCS2 has access to.

Anyone care to let me know what theirs reports?

Thanks

They are the same amounts that I was referring to Spooky :)

Mine: 113MB/1.12GB - one 3.5MB JPG open.

Are you sure you selected "scratch sizes" to be displayed rather than document size? 11.5MB seems rather low for Photoshop, dare I say impossible...

Thanks Tim - pays to read the thread properly or go to bed earlier

Redo: 11.5M document size = 97M/1.03G

Any ideas on why mine is using around 900MB to display a 4MB file?

did you install any plugins or anything to do with photoshop lately?
one of my teachers told me its got something to do with the plugins.

try open the same file on a similarly configured system but with fresh photoshop. everything runs smoother when fresh...
even my PSCS2 lags like a b*tch now... i think it started after i updated acrobat pro. not sure why, but csrss.exe never used to lag my system intermittently. now it does. :(

Yep, it is a hungry bugger, and it is definitely worth closing it down and reopening from time to time. Your undo setting is an issue, as are many other things. I just know I need a more powerful computer, and Ajit reckons my idea of having 2 gig RAM is inadequate, I need FOUR!
