New Challenge - Painting with Light - runs till 30.06.08

Postby Glen on Fri May 23, 2008 8:42 pm

UPDATE!
We have a winner!

We have a winner! This was very hard to judge with a number of entries vying for the top three. We could have easily had three 4th places. We do not know who the winner is yet (the judging is totally anonymous) but the winner is "Dulux Light", second is "Moon rise at the lighthouse" and third is "Girl admiring city lights" Details will come soon of the photographers and congratulations to all who entered. Ity was a small but high quality group of entries with one disqualification due to their logo taking up 25% of the image, somewhat broke the anonymity rule! The next challenge is coming up in a few days, hopefully everyone will see how easy it is to enter and have a go.

1st Dulux Light by Philip - user name PhilipB
2nd Moon rise at the lighthouse by Andre - user name Radar
3rd Girl admiring city lights by Steve - user name SteveGriffin

The Challenge

We have a new Challenge in our series and it starts now and runs till the 30th June 2008. The Challenge is called - Painting with Light - and is about exactly that, painting with light, but in keeping with the prizes offered and ensuring everyone is on a level playing field and doesn't use multithousand dollar softboxes (not mentioning any names oz) it is by torchlight. Yes, the humble old torch, go and grab the Dolphin or Maglite out of the cupboard and paint something in light. A car, a tree, rock formation, yourself, the choice is wide open and limited only by your imagination. You may choose to use the light and paint in another way, the choice is yours. As always, only global post processing.

The Prizes

What follows is a shameless plug for a top product  After noticing in a recent thread that there were a number of people here who appreciated a good torch, I decided to donate some torches as the prizes for this contest. The First Prize will be at the winner choice either a Wolf Eyes Defender 170 with crenulated bezel for breaking windows in an emergency or Wolf Eyes Sniper 170 a rugged and compact torch or one of the very small Wolf Eyes Angel in either AA or CR123 size Wolf Eyes Angel C. All of these lights put out roughly the amount of light of a Maglite and all feature high, medium and low beam. They also all feature a disorientating strobe which is particularly handy for a warning in case of car accident, flat tyre, etc. Whichever prize someone picks will come complete with a lithium ion battery and battery charger. The value of this prize is between $175 to $129 depending on the winners choice. Second Prize will be a Wolf Eyes Angel A in either AA or CR123 format Wolf Eyes Angel C without charger, valued at $99.

Would he know? :D :D

Seriously, great idea for a comp. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to enter the Crema one as the commitment was too much this close to end of fin year. :(

I love this quote from the wolfeyes website:

The Defender Digital 170 series features a bright 170 lumen disorientating strobe output strong enough to temporarily disorient or disrupt an individual’s night vision, perfect for self defence use or as a non lethal tool for officers of the law.

A question has been asked when are the images valid from? From the moment of the announcement till midnight on June 30th (when all entries must be submitted). If you have not entered a challenge before, and I encourage all eligible members (full members with 50+ posts as in the FAQ) to enter, just send a PM to MHD (Scott) for your access to the gallery. We will list the address of the gallery soon.

This challenge will be judged as per the last two but I have stepped down as a judge in favour of Mr ‘Wolf-Eyes’ Glen. So all bribes can now be directed to Glen :D :D

The gallery is now open and with the weather recently we should be able to practise painting with light at about 4 in the afternoon!

Details of how to enter, which is very simple, is described in Scott's (MHD) post 6 posts above this one

Two weekends to go

There are 2 full weekends till June 30th so plenty of time to enter this competition, at the present rate of entries it is almost every entry wins a prize. This should be an easy comp for all to enter, whether painting something with light like a piece of fruit, right through cars, people up to the side of a building.

And in fact this weekend is the winter solstice. Never a better opportunity, nor more time, to be painting with light.

As Gary said, small but excellent group. I have more cliches than you can poke a stick at, and to use one of them: photography was the real winner here! Congratulations to the winners and place getters and entrants and judges.

Now that 30 June has passed, I am keen to try to enter future competitions. :D
