Image display before shooting

IMHO its heaps better to frame the shot with the viewfinder

In fact the one thing I think that is better about my 5700 over my D70 is the ability to review images through the viewfinder as well

(yeah i know DSLRs dont work this way)

Still - love those viewfinders :D

I have to ask.. when joining a forum dedicated entirely to photography, why would you call yourself Photodude? Unless there's some detailed/entertaining backstory we don't know about?

umm a viewfinder is the way you do it on a DSLR PS use the LCD i think the viewfinder is much better than LCD you cut out glare and your getting a clearer image for focus etc

I think most people have been spoiled by the preview feature on cameras. Lol.

When I had my 5700, 9 out of 10 times I used the view finder, the only time I used the LCD was to hold the cam in strange places to get a shot.

The view finder I think is the best way to go for framing & cutting out glair.

Onyx, have you been taking your grumpy pills again?

It has had 56 views since 25 December - I would say that is pretty good.

I hadn't read it before, but it is useful. Maybe we need to get Gary to include a link to it in the email when new members register.

As this forum grows in the number of posts plus new members joining each day, the complexity of use will grow proportionally.

For those of us who have been around for awhile this is not a problem but for new members who are not aware of the procedures and processes it is within our best interests to guide rather than bully so that this forum retains its premium appeal for D70 owners.

I found one!

Postby jdear on Thu Dec 30, 2004 2:06 pm

Apparently FujiFilm is releasing its newest DSLR - S3 PRO sometime in the near future.

check it here: http://www.fujifilm.com.au/S3Pro/

This camera does allow the user to preview the image on the LCD screen prior to taking the image! a first for any DSLR.

It incorporates a pre-exposure "Live Image Mode" to enable the photographer to frame and focu images without the need for the viewfinder and is activated for up to 30 secs prior to normal exposure.

It supports the Nikon F mount as well as DX lens (eg kit lens) although im not sure it it supports nikons I-TTL.

I guess canon, kodak and nikon may well follow suit?

I don't think Nikon will follow Fuji that way and I like to keep my eyes in the viewfinder more than looking into the LCD

I also agree with Birddog - we don’t want to the D70(+) to become a P&S type camera!!!

I too prefer looking through a viewfinder.

D70 seems to be somewhere between P&S and Pro SLR with programmed shooting (read dummy) modes.

Cheers

One feature that I can possibly think might be of value along these lines (and has been introduced in P&S cams) is a histogram preview. Otherwise I think adding lcd viewing nothing more than marketing fluff.

I agree and would like to see the histogram as RGB plus MLU

The ability to preview the image before exposure is invaluable in macro photography and other situations where the camera is placed into awkward positions where it may be difficult to get your eye to the viewfinder. It also enhances composition for newbies and oldies alike. It was a much used feature on My Coolpix5000 and I for one would be happy to see it on a future version of the D75/80 or 90 or whatever they call the next model.

Hello Guys,

While I agree that all of the features mentioned would be great, I do not think that we will see them on an entry level dSLR such as the d70 to soon.

What I really want is a dSLR with a 6 or 8 mp iso100 B&W sensor, no dummy (I really do not like using that word, but cannot find something more appropriate) modes, a real shutter, ~95% view finder with focus aids...

Cheers

Matt, couldn't you simply expose the shot, check it out, make adjustments and then do it again? A bit like the old polaroid backs on larger format cameras, except much cheaper and easier.

Just an observation - the question from imarine which may have looked pretty basic (and is correctly in the Absolute Beginners section) has given rise to an interesting thread.

So, well done imarine!

[rant level="mild"] I must say I don't like using the lcd screen to preview. All that glare in the sun, and how are you meant to hold the camera steady when it is half an arms length from your body. [/rant]

When I do use a P&S I always try to avoid using the lcd. It is not something I would have on my wish list for the D70+.

The one problem I remember from my P&S days, using the viewfinder takes away all creative control of the camera. You pick your auto mode, frame the pic, and the camera decides the rest for you. You can't adjust at all for artistic creativity or effect. That was the main reason I chucked the P&S. It was limiting.
