Cemetery Photo Meet 23 Sep

I'm organising a DSLRUsers photo meet for Saturday 23rd September in the La Perouse/Botany area. And for something a little bit different, most of the day we'll be taking pics in a cemetery.

We'll meet at La Perouse about 9 am, have a bit of a chat in the park at La Perouse and take some pics before we head on to visit the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park (aka Botany cemetery). The cemetery itself was established in 1893, but within it's grounds is Pioneer Memorial Park where 746 headstones dating as far back as the 1840's were relocated from cemeteries closer to the city. Among the headstones in the memorial park are:
  • Lord family vault including Simeon Lord (1771-1840). Transported for stealing muslin and calico, Lord became a leading entrepreneur in the colony and a founder of the Bank of NSW
  • Mary Reibey (1777-1855), a young horse stealer and later one of Sydney's leading businesswomen.
  • John Cadman (1772-1848), principal superintendent of boats.
  • George Howe (1769-1821), sent to the colony for shoplifting Howe became a government printer and published Australia's first newspaper, the Sydney Gazette and NSW Advertiser.
  • Robert Watson, after whom Watson's Bay is named.
  • Ellis Bent (1783-1815), Judge-Advocate of NSW, and the first practising barrister-at-law in the colony.
  • George Panton Esq, the First Postmaster of the Territory

Also at the cemetary is Eastern Suburbs Memorial Grove which is a gothic complex of above ground vaults and crypts with gardens and shrines.

For a sample of what you may find in the cemetery see the first page of my cemeteries gallery HERE and for a sample shot from La Perouse, click HERE

Looking forward to it Peter. Having seen some of your pics, and the info you've since found out, this looks to be a great place of history.

That's my little secret, Andrew. :)

It's mentioned on the front page, but I;ve had a very hectic week with my first radio show to put together while at the same time, helping to pull together Olivia's first gig. Both of those happenned on the same day, which meant a very hectic lead-up over the last few days.

I still need to finalise a couple of minor details for the AW so it's no rest for this poor bunny.

And then there's .... work!

:)

A point on cancellations.

If you are interested I have no problem with you booking then later cancelling if something comes up as long as you don't cancel at the last minute since that may cost someone a spot. There is plenty of room at the cemetery so numbers aren't a major issue.

My place of work is right next to the Eastern Suburbs Cemetary! In all seriousness, there has been reports here on this site of unexplained phenomena, especially by the night security guards (knocking on doors while security cameras and visual checks shows nothing). While I personally haven't seen or experienced anything, I do urge y'all to take care - whether you believe in it or not (I have a first cousin who was left comatose for 6 months after mucking around in a cemetary with friends one night, so I'll decline this meet even if I wasn't working).

Pointer: if you continue on Military Road (where the cemetary is at), you'll come to Prince of Wales lookout, which can be quite photogenic, as well as offering views towards landing planes if you have a long enough lens.

Sorry if this is slightly OT, but is there some generally accepted protocol for photography in cemeteries? I haven't been game to take photos inside cemeteries for fear of upsetting (living) people, although I did take one photo from outside:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hangdog/64721656/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/30/64721656_a2ce0730c0_m.jpg" width="240" height="160" alt="dirt cheap" /></a>

I'm a bit concerned that Chryssine might leave Joe behind. :)

Hi all,

Chryssine claims that she has already picked the place to leave me

Being a good Greek, I'm certain that she has visited the Orthodox section on many occasions so I don't doubt that she means it

Stubbsy,

Can I get some rather exact address/direction to the site ? I'm not familiar with the area, plus I'm still dependant on public transport  Will need to plan my journey there.

I'll be emailing those who've registered tonight with full details. But in brief - we are meeting in Anzac Parade, La Perouse. The meeting point is the park with a mini stone tower in it. Anzac parade goes in a big loop around that spot. From there we'll be heading up to Botany cemetery and entering via the Reid avenue gate (Cnr Bunnerong Rd) and making our way to Pioneer memorial Park inside the cemetery grounds.

I'll be driving in from Liverpool - so if anyone needs a lift along the way give me a yell.

It's just around the corner from me though Craig - if Peter doesn't want to get you then I probably can! And if Peter does want to get you, then maybe he might want to get me as well? ;)

I'll be coming along the M5. Not super sure of the location of mortdale, but I may be able to give you a lift.

The bus you need is the 391, beware not all 391's go all the way to La Perouse, I think the buses servicing La Perouse come hourly....

Use http://www.131500.info/, it will work it all out for you
