Micro meet Fri 11/11

Postby stubbsy on Wed Nov 09, 2005 8:16 pm

I'll be in Sydney Thursday 10/11 for work so I'm staying down until Saturday for the mini meet. That in turn means I'm free all day Friday. I thought I might go for a wander around the city and take some pics or maybe go to the zoo.

If there are any Sydneysiders free on Friday interested in meeting up for an outing please get in touch. It's rememberance day too - not sure if this will present any photo ops.

I'll be at rehearsal from Friday at 4 and I know that's my major time I have to come, but I have no idea about beforehand... so if you need a tour of the old Gaol, I'm happy to give one.

Peter,

Yep mate, I'm free. I took the day off today as well :) bumped into Glen and Wendell.
Bondi sounds good, as does walk around town. Whatever really. I'm going to the zoo first week in December so I might duck out before you do that if you do that.

Peter,

The uni I went to, like all of the Sydney art universities, is located on something with a lot of history behind it. Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) is on the old Rozelle Insane Asylum... what the actual name is, I'll never know... but the "art" damn sure relates back to its history... UNSW's College Of Fine Arts (COFA) is, from what I remember, right next to the old Barracks in upper Darlinghurst... and my one, National Art School (not for much longer) is located at the old Sydney Women's Gaol behind the still-active
courthouse at Taylor Square in Darlinghurst.

I'll have to see what's doing Friday, but in principle I'd love to go out and shoot something. Closer to the city is better, but whatever suits you guys best. :)

I have Friday off, this is a very possible potential for me, although I do have to at some stage on this day go and scope out where I will be doing a mostly outdoor wedding shoot on the Saturday....I'll be in touch Peter :)

Sounds like fun. So at this stage we have:

- Me ( )
- Matt
- Paul
- Geoff
- Chi
- Leigh (???)
- Mike (subject to jetlag)
- Leon (???)

How's this for an agenda (with some VERY rough timings).
  • Meet at QVB at 9:30. Town hall end near QV statue.
  • spend 30 minutes or so taking pics inside QVB (should be less people at this time)
  • Catch train to circular quay take some pics around the quay (NOT opera house)
  • 10:30 catch the ferry to Manly and back again without getting off (opportunity for shots of the harbour and city)
  • 11:30 head back to the bridge and The Rocks (maybe go up the pylon for some high views of the city)
  • 11:30 - alternative - wander down to opera house, botanic gardens, art gallery, domain (should be plenty of shade in the gardens and it will be pretty warm by this time)
  • 12:30ish - get an easy cheap lunch somewhere ???
  • 2:00 - back in the city - strand arcade and other buildings
  • 3:00 - darling harbour or woolloomooloo

For $15 you can get a day tripper ticket that covers all transport on buses ferries and trains for the day

Certainly sounds workable.

I'll see if I need to be at rehearsal earlier, but I'll try and do it up till around 2ish or 4ish, depending on when I'm needed.

It should give my camera a good workout before I put it in for warranty and Bob knows how long Maxwell will take around this time of the year.

This sounds great, I am working a long day on thursday 7am-12pm or later, but friday I get off. If I can wake up earlier enough I'd be more then keen, or if I come in a little later maybe I can meet up with you somewhere.

Don't know QVB well enough to suggest an end - although near the Town Hall occurs to me as logical since I'll be catching the train in from Belmore

Paul - this gets me every time I have to set a meeting or whatever in my mobile phone for that time slot. My solution is to use 11:59 am and 11:59 pm to avoid the problem

Edit: I'm REALLY going to bed now!

would like to meet but can't during the day, one suggestion is you make it down to Bondi to stroll along sculpures by the sea, it's a really surreal experience, i was there last sunday totally fizzeled out by all the photographic opportunity.

Maybe I can manage a vodka and coke (my drink of choice) and try from some creative OOF shots..

but seriously I'm pumped, I missed the last night shoot and haven't been on a photography excursion (so to speak) so I'm looking forward to it..

Stubbsy, your suggestion of the Town Hall end (southern end) is good as there is lots of space there especially around the Queen Victoria statue, much more than the northern end, plus there is two coffe shops right there to boot

This looks like an excellent itinerary Peter. However with the Manly ferry idea you are not allowed to stay on board at each end, you HAVE to get off and back on. Might be worthwhile (if time permits) to walk up the Manly Corso and get some shots?!

We have been on the Manly ferry last August with Poon, Matt.K and Peter. Peter lost the hood of his 70-200VR in the ocean, we didn't have to get off and we stayed onboard for the return, perhaps there's new rules after that which I don't know.

Maybe there is a recent change, but in the 20 or so years I have been using the Manly Ferry, I have always noted the Ferry Inspectors ensuring that people get off. Things must have changed.

I've just found out that it's an unwritten rule...they don't always enforce it. Thanks for the update Thanh :)

Glen I'd already noted it was Remembrance Day (and, less importantly, dismissal day). Cenotaph is in Martin Place I think. Trouble is being there at 11:00, but even afterwards should be good with wreaths & the like having been placed.

Participant list updated on page 1 - meet at statue at Town Hall end of QVB 9:30 sharp.

I suggest you get a day tripper $15 ticket at your first public transport (you can get one when you board a bus & at train & ferry ticket offices)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's not as hot as today.

Remember water, suncreen and a hat.

Weather forecast issued 3:39 PM from BOM for Friday:
Fine. A cooler, less humid and mostly sunny day. Light to moderate southwest to southeast winds. Mostly sunny, min 16, Max 23

I think we're being invaded by flies at the moment.. It was like that when I went to North Head last week. It was hard to concentrate because there were so many of them.

16-23 degrees, yeah I'd like to believe that...

At this stage, I'm wondering whether or not to wear my OCAU's "I am not a terrorist I am a photographer" t-shirt. The argument against is for remaining inconspicuous; but then again how inconspicuous could a group of 10 guys with large cameras and spacious backpacks be?!

You can almost gurantee that sometime we'll be challenged. I have a vague recollection someone (Spada?) was stopped from taking pics inside QVB

Geoff - Wasn't it a praying mantis? Plus: Are you coming tomorrow?

Spada - thanks for the update.

Stubbsy - I will be there, but maybe not for the entire day! I'm quite excited!
I'm on annual leave at the moment and it'll be GREAT to just hang out with some like minded photogs and have some FUN around the city. I'll be on a bus and in the city to meet you all at 0930hrs :)

Think I should bring my valuable VELBON tripod? :)

Geoff

I'd forget the tripod. Too much to lug around.

Just checked cityrail times. I can leave Belmore at 8:17 to arrive Town Hall station at 8:48 or leave Belmore at 8:38, arrive Redfern at 9:02 change trains depart 9:07, then on to Town Hall arriving at 9:13

One of these options is dicing with death (assumes I'll make a 5 min window to change trains) the other sees me there 40 minutes early. Guess what time I leave Belmore  :D

I wouldn't take the Velbon. You will become a target for thieves and collectors. Leave it in a safe place and just make do with the Gitzo.

Matt

You crack me up. Maybe I should take my crappy 1325 & BH 55 Pro head.
