Swamp birds

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Actually I think that if this is you struggling then I would love to see the images where you aren't....
They are good, colours, compostion, sharpness etc I can't see anything to complain about at all..and I'm a women so thats really saying something...*wink*

Have to agree with Bindii here, Cards. Ripper shots! A little hot highlight on the back feathers in the first one but what a magic composition. Great stuff.

The birds in flight are slightly 'soft' looking - if this is what you mean by struggling - I think you need to prioritise shutter speed more on the moving photos.

I see they are at f9 - if you are doing this for sharpness, you lose a lot more from motion blur. However it does help with DOF.

Try around f4/f6 and shutter speeds faster than 1/1000.

You can fix up the sharpness in PP.

As Simon and Bindii say, if these are showing that you're struggling, I'm really looking forward to seeing some examples of your competence.

I must say that I really love the third of these: it just screams at me "I can fly! I can fly!" while all the while looking exactly as if it cannot. :)

As far as these three images is concerned, I prefer the first one because it has a stronger composition or perhaps I should say that it has more elements for the eyes to see, but all of them are very good

Thanks for the comments/suggestions. :)

Although these shots may be OK, in general I had trouble with blown highlights, general exposure and blur.

These 3 were the better ones out of a fairly average set of photos.

As Justin mentioned I think I need to watch the shutter speed for flying shots. I also need more practice handholding longish lenses.
