Matt,

That's somewhat similar - especially in terms of weight and basic design - the Birddog's newest ball head, with which I had an opportunity to play yesterday.

Nice ....

I have seen birddogs Markin ballhead and it's beautiful! But expensive! I wonder if I could knock something up using an old towbar?

What's NQR means Greg? BTW, my ballhead is the Markin 20:

http://www.markins.com/2.0/eng/ballheads.html

i got it about 10 days ago but have no time to play around with it and Sydney is wet and wet. I paid AU$648.59 from Nikonian.org shipped to me from Europe via AP, luckily no additional GST or duty. I'll have this ballhead will be mounted on the Gitzo 1325 + Portrait-Perfect Packages from RRS with L plates for my 3 cams bodies, to display to members next Saturday at the meet and let them try out.

Will take some photos and post on this forum later

Exactly what's your thoughts, people who designed & manufactured the first ballhead might saw the towbar and have their creatively brain to do the job. We have tow bar here in Australia nearly with every car but hardly seen them in the US same as weathershield.

Matt,

The trouble with a towball is that they usually have a flat surface on the top.

Mind you, for mounting a camera on a car, consider ...

tow bracket + towball ...

plus the coupling section from a trailer, modified to take a camera mount.

could mount one on the front of the 4WD too ....

Or just stick with a simple Manfrotto Superclamp.
