Softbox for speedlights

Hi, I know there are a number of softboxes available with an included mounting for speedlights, but these are relatively expensive compared to the variety of softboxes available for studio flash.

Has anyone had any success in devising a mounting system that allows using a speedlight with one of these studio softboxes? I did find a link to a post back in April (here) but I have seen that knowledge and ingenuity increases at an exponential rate on this forum so I was sure somebody would have come up with something since then.

Cheers, Muzz.

Thanks Mr Darcy. I had found the topics you refer to but I was specifically looking for a solution involving the adaptation of a studio softbox for a speedlight rather than an alternative softbox. I have a couple of light modifiers for the speedlight, as well as a diffusion panel but am interested in a commercial studio softbox ultimately.

Thanks anyway for the advice.

I did end up doing a mod the fits softbox and speedlights.

Ended up using couple of right angle brackets, a drill and 1/4" screws.

Mount is done using the SC29 (with the 1/4" mount on bottom).

Cost me about $10 from Bunnings and about 1 hour time. Getting used to this setup is a bit tricky.

I was just at vanbar today and saw some.

Look about halfway down, LumiQuest soft box. I hope this helps!

That sounds like what I want to do. Any tips/photos for that?

Much appreciated,

Muzz

Thanks Rooz - I found it!

Now I just need to find an appropriate speed ring and I'll see how I get on.

Cheers, Muzz

From my original design, I used 2 right angle brackets, to line them up like this:

___
^ ||
. ||____
. ...^...^

This shows the 2 overlapping right angle brackets, I use 2 screws to fix them together, and the ^ indicates drilling 1/4" wholes for the 1/4" screws to attach the bracket to the softbox (top) and flash/tripod (bottom).

I find using just 1 set of bracket is very unstable, maybe I will try using 2 sets (2 fix points) so it will not rotate on any axis when using it.

But either way, it worked... :P
