Yep - I've seen them in the flesh (?) at birddogs. Although to be fair the difference is marginally less when the hoods are removed (but only marginally).

Where are some shots with it?

New generation of users! They all go for VR now! two more 200-400VR ordered today from two Sydneysiders and perhaps it'll be shortage same as the 70-200VR.

Interesting thought. I see the biggest plus of VR is it gives me more stops hand held. I have no problem hand holding with either the 80-400 or 70-200, but the 200-400 - fugeddit

So...

Why would VR be advantageous when tripod mounted vs a non VR lens which would, presumably, cost less?

!/ they don't make 200-400 Non VR version
2/ with VR you can pan easily and flexibility in handholding, non VR with tripod or monopod then make you cranky once you missed the shots.
Too slow with tripod or monopod, my hard earned experiences
3/ The Non VR lens say AF-S 300/f.4 is nearly Aussie $2K, AF-S 300/2.8 nearly 8K, 400/f.2.8 = $15k, price at retails shop in Australia.

Nicely put Stubbsy

Whats the point of having a VR lens,if you are
going to mount it on a tripod. Waste of money I think!!!!

Then buy non-VR if money is not your objects!
200-400Vr is designed for shoot in handholding techniques and I did with it but could not do with non VR lenses in that range.
Non VR in that range (Nikon) cost you more!

Birdy, you may have done this just to see if it was possible, but you wouldn't really consider it for any event would you? Your arm would drop off before your 10th shot.
I could see a use for the VR though if you had it mounted on a helicopter chasing wildlife in Africa.

Yes, exactly! around 10 shot, it is OK with VR lens but none with non VR lens in that range. Handholding technique is not required you to have the lens in armed mode all the time, after one or two shots, put it down, breath, rest and re-arm and shoot.
Can't do that with NON-VR.
In rotary wing, more impossible with Non VR, even VR lens is still affected with the vibration of the airframe.

Do they have special stabilisation mounts for helicopter ie. something gyro based?

You could imaging flying over some war torn country with a 200-400VR with some nice helicopter mount and have some poor ground person thinking he's being tracked with an M60.

Yes, I have one, it can mount on the rotary airframe with VR again (Vibration absorbing system) and it cost me nearly US$3K with special mounting hardware and construction.

P.S: Design and spec. for the US Military.

RobW, congratulations, really great piece of glass. I am sure you will love it! Personally I would not be able to sleep

Philipb, have handheld Birddy's 200-400, not bad at all (maybe raw enthusiasm helped), don't think I would have a problem handholding except maybe a football match where you have to be always on, where I would use a monopod with VR

ps Robw, talk to Birddy re the RRS replacement foot, details here http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/lens_pl ... index.html

fozzie,
Order one, and you'll have it before March 20!

I would have to win a 'Lottery' to afford the 200-400VR. As I do not gamble, no chance. I will just have to be happy to see Rob's next month.

fozzie,
hahahahah!
  Do you know that, Rob will ask for a small premium of $20.00 everytime you want to touch it?
:D Pretty nice looking toy!

I will organise some sort of contra deal with Rob, that way saving on $20.00 premium    .

I must get back to work now :( .

Man saw a review of the Sigma 300-800. What a monster!
Think this would make a nice addition to the lense collection :)
