El cheapo flash diffuser

I'm not sure if this (non original) el-cheapo u-beaut home-made flash diffuser has been featured on this forum before. I stumbled across this yesterday (thanks to google) and made this diffuser to go on a borrowed Canon 420 external flash:

Image

All it requires is a (washed) empty milk container (for Queensland viewers PLEASE empty the milk out first :D ), then cut to desired shape using trial and error (bodgy) construction method. Apply rubber band. Voila!

I gave it a workout as a family get together last night, and these are results. (I'm not interested in critique on these photos, (unless you must) - they're just quick snaps to test my (stolen yet original) invention:

Great DIY, and it works great :D

Have you thought of putting some silver paper or aluminium foil on the backing to make the light more forward directional?

No I haven't, but it's worth a try. Thanks for the tip.

Awesome stuff, and again with the addition of the directional foil. I will have to try this if I get a flash unit.

Ozimax, you've inspired me to see what I can do about getting my Nikon SB-400 a milk bottle diffuser now... if I'm successful I'll post up what I come up with :D

A top tip hehe

I was actually going to have it with cereal and incorporate the cereal box with my creation. It'll look nothing like a Sto-Fen

Well here it is, my effort of turning a plastic milk bottle into a flash diffuser. I used some velcro on the sides to attach it to the SB-400. In terms of how effective it is... well it does kinda diffuse the light a little. Since I don't have a proper diffuser to compare with I'm not sure :D

Looks cool. How did you attach it to the flash eg what does the velcro stick to? Do you have to glue something onto the flash itself?

The velcro has that self-adhesive glue on the other side so its stuck to the flash head and extremes of the plastic. Holds pretty well, but I only assembled it this morning so will have to see how durable it is. The glue also doesn't leave any sticky residue which is a plus!
