Grev - the sensor size is not indicative of either its qualities or abilities.

The Fuji sensor is renowned for its low noise as is the 4.7Mb Nikon D2Hs sensor.

I thought if you turn on something in the settings, you get a 12MP output from the S5.

So right - you have 2 sensors in a hexagonal configuration - each sensor is 6.17Mp and are named S and R. In the camera you can change the pixels to 4256x2848 (12.1Mp), 3024x2016 (6.1Mp) and 2304x1536 (3.54Mp).

The S3 has the R+S pixel sensor. The difference can be seen in the highlight data where the dynamic range is increased.

So take a typical summers day, now throw a bride in a white dress and the groom in a black suit. The Fuji is able to capture more dress detail without sacrificing the exposure and losing out on contrast compared to Nikon and canon DSLRS.
