Anyone have a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

Hi all,

I did a quick search for the Tamron SP AF 17-50 f/2.8 xr Di II LD lens here but couldn't find anything. However, I saw the reviews on the 28-75 Tamron which sounds good for the price.

Anyway, if anyone has the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 can you give me/us (your review) on this lens and if possible post a sample picture or two. I'm just curious about it, because it's rather a cheap lens when you think of it or compare it to others in it's range.

Thanks
Bill

Hi mate,

I've got the Tamron however its a Canon mount. It's an awesome lens and definitely lives up to its reviews. I bought as an upgrade to the kit lens and my choice was between this, the Sigma 18-50 and the Tamron 17-70 (or was it sigma).

Very happy with it, extremely sharp IMO.

Hi There,

I have the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and I love it. it's very sharp and gives great DOF when you ask it.

It's repalced the kit lens from Nikon and I expect it'll stick around till I break it or can afford some of that Nikkor goodness.

on a side note, how much should i expect to fetch a new one for?
i really cant afford the 17-55 at the moment (unless someone's offloading their's?)

i've got the 28-75/2.8 at the moment, however its way too long for group shots in tight spaces

I don't know if Poon stocks them or what his price might be but I got mine off ebay for $405 but DD Photographics in North Sydney have them for $459

Another thumbs-up here

I also have the Canon version as a replacement for the kit lens and love it.

Very sharp, very solid feel and good DOF.

I was desperate, I'll just have to make the happiness of the 24-70 last the rest of the year :)

dviv, which store was this?

afaik, anything <600 is below cost..

What do you guys think of it in terms of build quality, sturdiness, the cheap plasticky feel, etc?
Is the mount plastic?

Im quite happy with my 28-75 in these regards, its also got a metal mount too so I hope its the same in the 17-50

I've got one; great lens, lightweight, sharp though can have a slight colour cast. It practically lives on my D300 now and the good ol' 18-200VR has been 'downgraded' to live on my other half's D80. Definite step up from the Nikon kit lenses (18-55, 18-70, 18-135).

I got mine in HK for about A$367 new but that's ex-GST and shipping.

On this lens, I spoke to Maxwell and they should have the A16NII (the new version with internal motor) in stock late April early May.

hah.. im sure we'd all love the 24-70.. but the tammy 17-50 is hard to beat for its price and weight.

the internal focussing motor... would this be some sort of SWM/USM motor or are we looking at an inbuilt drill?

Inbuilt drill - in this post a few days I posted a link to a first quick review which said it is slow

I have the Canon mount.

I love this lens, though do find myself adding a bit of contrast, but that isn't a bad thing.

Excuse the PP, vignetting is not an issue.

I was looking at this review from the couple of post above and it says that "These lenses are not designed for conventional cameras and digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm." Now I still have my D70s so its a perfect choice but sooner or later depending on how much the D700 settles in price. Would it be worth getting this lens if is not really suitable to The D700 which image sensor with an area of 36.0mm (h) x 23.9mm? I see its just perfect for the D300. Or is best to sit and wait and see what others lens are avalible which are more suit or it just doesn't really matter

It should still work in DX crop mode on the D700, so if you need the lens now, and dont think you will be getting a D700 or a D3 anytime soon (ie on 25/8 when the D700 is due to hit stores) then get it now.

True I guess when time comes you can just sell it. But yeah I think I do need the lens now, was tossing up between kit lens 18-70mm, then I found this thread and it just raves on about it this lens so it must be good. The 24-120 I have currently is good but just find it lacks that wide angle that i sometimes needs when taking picture of a group of people.

Anyone know where the best place to score this lens for a Decent price, been looking at Ebay and it don't seem to bad 400ish, Wonder if Poon stocks this lens :D
