Well, a search didn't turn up much so here goes. What TC's have you all used, had good luck with, hated, pro's con's, etc. Any incompatabilities. I am looking for (most likely) a 2x and there seems to be a huge difference in price between brands, sigma, tamron, Nikon, and (gasp) quantaray. One reviewer did a test between the Tam 2x and the Quan 2x and the pics and tele's were almos identical. The only difference was the price by about $100US!!!!!! craziness eh?

my main use will be the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR so I am expecting to be flamed for even considering other options the the big N$KON machine!

I have all three Nikon TCs .14/1.7/2.0
The 1.4 & 1.7 are well matched with the 70-200VR or 200-400VR, more keepers than the 2.0, I only used the 2.0 in superb lighting otherwise suffering very much in softness.
The Kenko, Tamron are coming from one factory.
And they're same quality, prices may varied due to the marketing and brand.

I have a tamron 2x and it's quite crap. Although it works well with my 500mm manual focus mirror lens, it is not very good with anything else. It works in autofocus with my old tokina lenses but does not work in AF at all with the kit lens.

It is more than soft with my 300mm f5.6 Tokina zoom, in fact it is more like putting a soft-focus filter on the end of the lens, it's that bad.

It works well providing me with 1000mm for shooting the sun, but not much use for anything else.

I really don't know why i bought the damn thing.
Steve.

I have the 70-200VR. After consulting with Birddog, I ordered the Nikon TC-17E11 which is due to arrive from Poon within the next day or so.

Cheers,

They say timing is everything. After I posted, I ran down to Barnes and Noble to pick up the new Michael Chriton book. As I perused some Mags, came across Pop Photo Jan 2005 pgs 56-57 - Teleconverters; The Digital Remix. Article about using TC's with various digital lenses. Looks like olmpus is the first to produce a digitally optimized TC. What that may mean, they really didn't explain. Heres the mfg's site
