Photo taking places in Melb?

Postby Chica on Tue Nov 24, 2009 8:25 pm

Hi everyone

Tom and I will be in Melb for a few days next week and we are wondering if anyone can suggest any locations in the general CBD area to take some cool and interesting photos. Any tips appreciated :-)

Federation Square is something that people have a love/hate opinion of, but it is a great space to photograph.

From there, wander down to the Yarra's edge, and head towards the MCG. This then becomes Birrarung Marr, with nice city views and riverscapes.

You can then cross the river at the Swan St bridge, and come back to the city along the other side. But then you just missed the Royal Botanic Gardens, , the Domain...

In the city, check out Melbourne Central, with the shot tower enclosed in a glass cone.
Across the road from there (Swanston St) is the State Library, and some funky buildings of the RMIT campus to your left.

In the other direction is Bourke St Mall, which is the starting point for some really nice covered arcades such as the Royal Arcade and the Block Arcade.

I'd highly recommend you to jump on the FREE City Circle tram, which gives you a great insight into Melbourne with it's running commentary, and you can just hop off if you see something of interest to you. It will take you from Parliament House right down to the Docklands area too. The Vic Markets are a short walk away from the tram too. If you get off the tram at Flinders St station, check out the cafes and laneways of Degraves St.

There's a few days worth of activities for you. Looking forward to seeing how you photograph our great city! PM me if you need a guide...

Hi Cathy

lol I would have said what Paul said... not. A very detailed an a excellent summary from you Paul. All I could add is opposite Fed square there are many alley / lane ways full of fantastic graffiti and you could spend several hours walking and photographing the various walls of graffiti.

Enjoy Melbourne...

I have only visited once and would have to agree with the above suggestions. While you are near Fed Square, swing by Hosier lane, it's just over the road. Basically a dirty back alley full of graffiti. I've seen some very cool shots come from there and I certainly loved shooting it, though I didn't get anything too exciting.

Hope you enjoy the trip!

Hi Cathy , while the Melb guys will know their city well and should be able to give the best spots ..
Karl & I did a quick 3 day trip last school holidays ...I would recomemnd
The zoo - a no brainer as members ...but try and get to the butterfly house really early in the morning before they heat up and become really active, the primates are different from our zoo so worth some time, and they have elephants (Arctic penguines at the aquarium but possibly not worth the entry fee)
The city from the river - we did a ferry ride to the science museum (leaves from southbank) Karl wanted to do the Star Wars exhibition and planeterium (both fun may interest Tom) ..but I got some shots from the ferry , great bridges and different perspective from the water - then Fed square and the old train stationt - nice along Fed sqaure for night light reflections .
Lots of Interesting architecture so suggest you try the free tourist tram and get on an off as things take your fancy
Great arial shot from te observation deck

Have fun

Here are three things for you not to miss

Hosier lane (graffiti)

Shot tower in Melbourne central (iconic)

At night - the hourly flame show over the yarra river at the crown casino (bring a tripod)
