Camera shops around Melb

Postby watchtherocks on Sun Jan 20, 2008 11:47 pm

Gday all. First post here.
I was just wondering about 2nd hand camera shops in melbourne. I can't seem to find any. Admittedly, I haven't looked too hard, just up and down Elizabeth st, where sales assistants try to sell me everything in the shop (and let me hold 1Ds MIII w/24mm 1:1.2!!!), but I'm looking for Canon FD gear mainly.
Also places that have expired film waiting to be brought at dirt cheap prices :D
Being a site labelled 'DSLR users' I mightn't have much luck, though.

I bought my Nikon F5 at a second hand camera shop in Melbourne. I think it was on Flinders Lane, near Elizabeth street.

Hi, there are two camera shops that do second hand ... one is Camera Exchange located on Lonsdale St just up the hill from Michaels .... the other is Camera Lane on the corner of Lt Bourke St and Hardware Lane ... the easiest way to find this place is to walk up the hill from Camera Action (Camera House).
In effect .. all the camera shops are wrapped about on city block. Hope this is a help.

As already noted, there's Camera Exchange (which IMHO used to be better before they redid the place a couple of years ago) and Camera Lane. ASAIK, they share similar ownership.

There is also an antiques fair in Prahran, within which there is a stand that sells older, and often quite interesting, cameras and the like. Well worth a visit.

Camera Lane and Camera Exchange are not owned by the same people or companies; they are independent of each other. They do however talk to each other and help each other out on small stock shortages and technical problems as required.

Thanks. But out of a city of 4 million, only two shops that sell second hand gear? Theres gotta be a few hidden places. A knowing look to the shopkeep takes you out back to a modest few shelves of dusty camera gear . . .

This forum is a bit quiet, ain't it?

Fleabay has caused this decline in the amount of retail second hand shops. Followed by the prawn shops.
At least 4 outlets in Melbourne I know of have capitulated.
Soon they will be selling digitals in supermarkets and this will put pressure even on Elizabeth street. :violin:

There aren't many SH camera shops in Sydney either.

It sure is a pity that most 2nd hand stuff has moved to the internet. It's so nice to be able to hold the camera in your hands and check it out, rather than rely on stock pictures and someone elses opinion of what 'good' is.

Thanks for the Camberwell market heads up, pucura.

Take a trip to HKG.

On Kimberley St, just off Nathan Rd, there's a small arcade with a half dozen second hand camera stores in it, each of which is stocked to the rafters with .... toys. :)

If you go to Box Hill market or East Doncaster shopping centre you would think you are in HKG
